چکیده

Coordinated behaviour depends on selective attention: the ability to select a limited subset of stimuli for detailed analysis, while suppressing the stream of irrelevant information continuously received by our senses. Over the past three decades, converging evidence from neurophysiology, neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience has suggested that selection modulates brain activity at sensory cortical levels (Desimone and Duncan, 1995; Kastner and Ungerleider, 2000; Saalman et al., 2007), and that potential sources of control are distributed across a frontoparietal network of brain regions (Corbetta and Shulman, 2002; Corbetta et al., 2008). More recently, TMS studies have provided insights into the functional neuroanatomy of selective processes, revealing not only which areas of the healthy human brain are crucial for attention, but also when they are engaged during the timecourse of information processing.

Decoding emotional prosody: resolving differences in functional neuroanatomy from fMRI and lesion studies using TMS.

BACKGROUND Prosody conveys information about the emotional state and intention of others. Lesion studies have shown that damage to the right posterior temporal region is associated with prosody decoding deficits. Dissimilarly to findings from lesion studies, neuroimaging data show substantial bilateral peri-Sylvian activation. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the involvement of the l...

A3-24 Neural basis of online control during visually guided reaching

Involvement of the left posterior parietal cortex (lPPC) in online motor control has been demonstrated using mainly functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI, for review see Culham et al, 2006). However, the human homologue to the macaque parietal reach region, or even more detailed functional anatomy of processes involved in motor control, is still controversial (Iacoboni, 2006). One challen...

Non-invasive Functional Brain Mapping Using Registered Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

We describe a method for mapping the functional regions of the brain using a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device. This device, when placed on a subject's scalp, stimulates the underlying neurons by generating focused magnetic eld pulses. A brain mapping is then generated by measuring responses of di erent motor and sensory functions to this stimulation. The key process in generating ...

Experimentation with a transcranial magnetic simulation system for functional brain mapping

We describe functional brain mapping experiments using a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device. This device, when placed on a subject's scalp, stimulates the underlying neurons by generating focused magnetic field pulses. A brain mapping is then generated by measuring responses of different motor and sensory functions to this stimulation. The key process in generating this mapping is t...

Imbalance between left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in major depression is linked to negative emotional judgment: an fMRI study in severe major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND Although recent neuroimaging and therapeutic transcranial magnetic cortex stimulation (TMS) studies suggest imbalance between left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in major depressive disorder (MDD) the fundamental neuropsychological characterization of left DLPFC hypoactivity and right DLPFC hyperactivity in MDD remains poorly understood. METHODS We used event-rela...
